Monday indeed proved unlucky for the cooperative world of India in general and IFFCO in particular when the chairman of the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO), Surender  Jakhar was killed while cleaning his gun in Punjab .

Surender Jakhar, son of high-profile Jat leader and senior Congressman Balram Jakhar, was taken to the hospital where he was declared brought dead in Punjab’s Abohar city, in Firozpur district. He was to go to his farm and had sent his body guard and assistant in advance to the farm.

Balram Jakhar once served as the Governor of Madhya Pradesh. He had also served as a Union minister in the past.

Mr. Jakhar was  a graduate from DAV College, Punjab University, Abohar.  He was actively involved with the Cooperatives for about three decades.

Mr. Jakhar, a renowned cooperator, during his long and illustrious career, has made significant contribution aimed at accelerating the agricultural and rural development. A widely travelled person, he carried with him rich and varied experience in the field of agriculture and cooperation.

His zeal in solving and improving the financial position of rural people particularly the farmers and augmenting their incremental incomes through cooperatives remained his goal through out his life. He kept trying to realize his dream of  net-working of cooperatives all over the world to meet their various requirements and needs of people at large for their economic betterment.
