The Maharashtra Cabinet has approved an amendment to the Maharashtra Cooperative Societies Act, 1960, to increase government-nominated members on the boards of eligible cooperative institutions from two to five.
The decision, taken on Wednesday, provides for five government nominees in cooperative institutions with an annual turnover exceeding Rs 500 crore that receive financial assistance from the government in the form of share capital, loans, guarantees, funds, land or other support.
The five nominees will comprise one government officer not below the rank of Assistant Registrar and four individuals with experience in the functioning of such institutions. The government officer will not have voting rights, while the other four nominees will be entitled to vote but cannot contest elections for office-bearer positions.
The amendment to Section 73AAA(2) of the Act will be introduced through an ordinance. District Central Cooperative Banks (DCCBs) have been specifically excluded.
The government says the move aims to prevent board-level deadlocks and quorum-related difficulties while ensuring that elected boards continue to manage these institutions.
Reacting to the development, Congress Party has said that the State govt wants to take Control of Gokul dairy after Poll Defeat.
