The Tamil Nadu Government is selling fine-variety rice at Rs 30 per kg through Amudham and cooperative stores across the state to keep prices under control and ensure affordable access to essential food commodities.
The initiative was initially launched at 30 locations in Chennai on October 17, 2026, and has since been expanded across the state.
According to the Department of Cooperation, a total of 995 metric tonnes of fine-variety rice has been allocated for the scheme. Of this, 574.058 metric tonnes have been dispatched to 34 districts, while 439.108 metric tonnes have reached retail outlets.
As of October 21, a total of 16 metric tonnes of rice had been sold through 184 sales outlets across the state.
In Chennai alone, 1,286 kg of rice has been sold through 19 outlets. The Tiruvallikeni Urban Cooperative Society’s outlets recorded sales of 298 kg at its Corporation Commercial Complex outlet and 178 kg at its Karthikeyan Salai outlet. The Park Town Cooperative Wholesale Stores outlet recorded sales of 120 kg.
The initiative highlights the role of the cooperative retail network in ensuring affordable food supplies and protecting consumers from rising rice prices.
