The Warehousing Development and Regulatory Authority (WDRA) conducted an Outreach Programme in Chennai on Thursday, at the National Institute of Cooperative Management (NICM), highlighting the important role of the cooperative sector in strengthening India’s agricultural warehousing and pledge finance ecosystem.

The programme saw participation from officials of the Tamil Nadu Co-operative Department, Agri Marketing & Agri Business, Tamil Nadu State Apex Co-operative Bank and Tamil Nadu Warehousing Corporation (TNWC), along with bankers, cold storage operators and traders.

Discussions focused on creating greater awareness about the electronic Negotiable Warehouse Receipt (e-NWR) system, encouraging warehouse registration and enabling farmers to access pledge finance against stored agricultural commodities.

The participation of cooperative institutions was particularly significant, given their extensive grassroots network and close association with farmers and agricultural communities.

Strengthening coordination between cooperative banks, warehouses and farmers can help make e-NWR-based finance more accessible.
