Cooperative and microfinance victims protesting outside Nepal’s National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) office in Pulchowk have appealed to the United Nations for intervention in resolving their longstanding grievances, media reports say.

The protesters, led by Nagarik Bachau Maha Abhiyan, have been staging a sit-in for five days, alleging that the government headed by Prime Minister Balendra Shah has failed to address their demands.

Using placards, the protesters urged UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to take note of their suffering, claiming they had lost homes and family support amid their financial hardships. The demonstrators submitted a memorandum to the NHRC on August 14, seeking implementation of agreements reached with the previous government between mid-January and mid-February.

They began their sit-in outside the Commission following submission of the memorandum, demanding concrete action on their complaints and relief for affected cooperative and microfinance borrowers.
