As many as 68,020 functional cooperative societies across India remain unaudited, even as the country has 6.63 lakh functional cooperatives, Cooperation Minister Amit Shah informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
According to the National Cooperative Database (NCD), India has 8.53 lakh cooperative societies, of which 6.63 lakh are functional, 1.41 lakh non-functional and 49,177 are under liquidation. Of the functional societies, 5,94,791 have been audited, while 68,020 are yet to undergo audit.
Maharashtra has the highest number of functional cooperatives at 2.20 lakh, with 2.11 lakh audited. Gujarat follows with 79,823 functional societies, including 73,340 audited, while Telangana has 46,672 functional cooperatives, of which 43,478 have been audited.
Shah said the Government has taken several measures to improve transparency and accountability, including the 2023 amendment to the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, PACS computerisation, model bye-laws and the National Cooperative Database.
He added that 115 Multi-State Cooperative Societies are currently under liquidation, including 26 in Rajasthan, 23 in Maharashtra and 16 in Delhi.
