Choose Maha Govt’s Self-Redevelopment, Not Builders: Darekar

BJP MLC and NCUI GC Member Pravin Darekar has urged Mumbai’s cooperative housing societies to opt for self-redevelopment through the Maharashtra government’s Self Group Redevelopment Authority (SGRA) instead of conventional builder-driven projects, saying the model offers greater transparency, better construction quality and higher benefits for members.

Addressing the media, Darekar said nearly 1,600 housing societies have already submitted proposals, indicating growing confidence in the initiative. He noted that access to finance has traditionally been the biggest hurdle for self-redevelopment, but government-backed funding has made it easier for middle-class societies to independently execute their projects.

He said registered cooperative housing societies can obtain loans at regular lending rates, while unregistered societies will receive assistance in completing registration before becoming eligible for financial support.

Highlighting the scheme’s performance, Darekar claimed all 21 completed self-redevelopment projects were delivered within three years. He added that the government is also encouraging cluster redevelopment, enabling multiple societies to jointly create modern housing with improved amenities and significantly larger carpet areas for residents.
